We were invited to go along with a group of about 100 people. This was a work function but Mat's whole department got invited. The trip happens every other year. Mat always feels weird about attending this because it's not his company that hosts this. He is a customer of this company and this celebration is the company's International Sales Meeting. So, not only do we not know most of the people in attendance, we are most definitely the outsiders. The good news is that spouses and children get invited along so Mat isn't alone and also he is there with his work peers. This company is located in Canada so everyone but us is Canadian. It's always an interesting experience but dear god, this company knows how to party and the trips are always lavish. In 2011, they took us to San Diego and we stayed at Hotel Del which was amazing. Believe it or not, the Broadmoor topped it. Most of you saw the pictures on Instagram so I won't bore you with the repeats.
The week before the Broadmoor, my sister Molly came to visit. She wants to relocate to Fort Collins and we are all for it. She is graduating with her second Bachelor's degree this December and we are slowly planning her move for after graduation. She met with a few recruiters while she was out here but unfortunately, most of the week consisted of car drama for me. Mat was out of town for 4 of the 6 days that she was here and it was seriously one thing after another with my car. It all started with me having my brakes checked at a national chain. My car just reached 70,000 miles and the brakes on the car are the original ones. I wasn't surprised to hear I needed rear pads and rotors. I told the mechanic to go ahead and make the repairs and to call me when it was done. When Evelyn and I got there to get the car and started to drive away, the car wouldn't stop. I didn't get far from the mechanic and turned around and went back. I was told that the master cylinder was leaking and this mechanic didn't have the capacity to repair it and I'd have to go to the dealership. What? You knew there was a serious issue with the brakes and you let me put my six month old child in the car? I won't give you the details of it all day by day because honestly, I'm getting angry all over again just typing this.....I ended up at a different mechanic, renting a car and $1100 later have now had almost the entire brake system replaced, the transmission flushed, the car aligned and a new strut put on. Mat went to the owner of the franchise of the national chain and they never offered a refund much less an apology for what they had done. I recently joined Angie's List and am choosing companies from this list now based on my recent experiences. I also plan to write a negative review on this list against the national chain as well as file a complaint with the BBB. They are unethical and people should know.
You'd think we were in tip top shape after all that until the day we left for the Broadmoor. We were one hour into the two and a half hour drive and the air conditioning went out. I am totally not kidding. So, here we are sweating to death with poor Evelyn. We just dropped my car back off at the mechanic this morning to figure out what has now happened and why we have no AC. I swear, if its not one thing it's most definitely another. We have agreed we don't want another Ford and are very disappointed to have so many things go wrong with less than 100,000 miles on the car.
We have Evelyn's 6 month check up next week. We are two weeks behind this appointment because of our travels and her pediatrician taking vacation. We did go to the Dr. last Friday - same week as the insane car stuff - because she was crying a lot and pulling at both of her ears. Come to find out, she has a "ridge" on the bottom of her mouth where her bottom two teeth are trying to come in. The pain was causing her to pull at her ears and face. She's now old enough for Motrin so we have given that to her and she is chewing up every teether in the house. No teeth yet but at least we now know what the issue is. She is also this close to getting up on all fours and taking off. She has wanted to crawl for the last couple of weeks and last week accidentally crawled backwards. You should have seen the look on her face. It was priceless. She looked up at me with an expression that said "how did I just do that?"
Next week we also have our 6 month post-placement meeting with our social worker. This is the last home visit in our adoption process. Our attorney has also filed all the paperwork with the court in our county and we are waiting for our court date. It should be anywhere from October - December and then we will officially be done. She will take our name, get a new birth certificate and be issued a new social security number. Plus, we will be done with our agency and all the monthly paperwork I have to fill out and mail to them. I can't wait to legally be more than just a foster parent to our child! All trips and plans have been put on hold until we get this court date. My Atlanta family hasn't met her yet and they are all patiently waiting. We were originally going to fly out in October but our attorney told us not to book the tickets yet.
I still talk to Evelyn's birth mom off and on but we haven't seen her again since that first meeting when Evelyn was 15 days old. That was our only face to face meeting with her. We have scheduled three other times to meet and she has canceled each one of them. I was baffled by her constantly canceling on us so Mat put it in cat speak for me: "Jaime, imagine if we had to give Momo away for whatever reason. Would you want to go visit him every couple of months and see how happy he is with someone else?" Point taken Mathew. I still text her updates and photos and she will respond to those but we haven't agreed to meet up again. I will always be available when she's ready and I have let her know that.
This Labor Day weekend we plan to work on the yard, prepare for the weather to change and grill out with our neighbors. I have also started setting up a playroom for Evelyn and hope to work more on that. Once it's done I will post pictures. She's now over six months old and there are a couple of new foods to try. I'll be sure and post those pics as well. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Here she is this morning eating oatmeal and prunes.
